Aims and Objectives

At MEV College Güzelbahçe Private High School, we offer a curriculum which enables learners of English to acquire the necessary skills that are needed in order to communicate fluently and coherently in their second language. In our efforts to guide our students to educate themselves throughout their lives, we have designed the following instruments to fit the needs of our pupils. The components of our project are an INDEPENDENT LEARNER GUIDE, a WORK FOLDER and a PUPIL EVALUATION FILE.

The INDEPENDENT LEARNER GUIDE supplements the curriculum by awakening the pupils to the requirements necessary to make them autonomous learners. Pupils are encouraged to organize themselves, so that they make the best use of their time, assess their own progress through self assessment forms, become aware of their strengths and weaknesses and set aims to improve themselves by taking their unique learning styles into consideration. This will enable students to take an active role in the learning process and develop both their language and independent study skills. To raise awareness of all the individual elements required to become an independent learner and make the most out of their academic year. In the WORK FOLDER pupils will keep all the work they do throughout the year, which at a later date will be evidence of their language competence. The PUPIL EVALUATION FILE is a record of the performance of each pupil, kept by the teachers, to give the necessary individual guidance.

In the preparation of these documents we, as the ENGLISH DEPARTMENT, have considered not only the guidelines of the EUROPEAN LANGUAGE PORTFOLIO, but also the latest developments in language teaching. We have made adaptations to suit the needs of the Turkish education system.

We realize that education is an ongoing process and we are constantly trying to develop ourselves. In providing the best of guidance, we need the cooperation of our pupils. Their feedback will be of great value to us in the further development of our project.

Amaçlarımız ve Hedeflerimiz

MEV Koleji Özel Güzelbahçe Lisesi İngilizce öğretmenleri olarak öğrencilerimizin gereksinimlerini dikkate alarak hazırladığımız dil gelişim projesi DİL BAŞARI ÇİZELGESİ, BAĞIMSIZ ÖĞRENME REHBERİ, ÇALIŞMA DOSYASI ve ÖĞRENCİ DEĞERLENDİRME DOSYASI bölümlerinden oluşmaktadır.

BAĞIMSIZ ÖĞRENME REHBERİ her öğrencinin, kendini bağımsız olarak geliştirebilmesi için sahip olması gereken becerilerin farkına varmasını ve onları edinebilmesini sağlamak amacıyla hazırlanmıştır. BAĞIMSIZ ÖĞRENME REHBERİ’nin içerdiği çalışmalar ile öğrenciler, zamanı en iyi şekilde kullanma, kendilerini değerlendirerek güçlü ve eksik yönlerini fark etme, öğrenme biçimlerini keşfederek belirledikleri hedefler doğrultusunda kendilerini geliştirme konularında teşvik edilecek ve yönlendirileceklerdir. Ayrıca öğrencilerin kazanması amaçlanan davranışlar ile yıl boyunca yapılacak olan çalışmalarla ilgili detaylı bilgiler de BAĞIMSIZ ÖĞRENME REHBERİ’nde yer almaktadır. Böylece öğrencinin, öğrenme sürecinde aktif rol alması ve hem öğrendiği yabancı dili hem de bağımsız çalışma becerisini geliştirmesi sağlanacaktır.

Öğrenciler yıl boyunca yapacakları çalışmaları ÇALIŞMA DOSYALARI’nda bulunduracaklardır. Bu çalışmalar daha sonra öğrencilerin yabancı dil yeterliliklerinin kanıtı olacaktır.

ÖĞRENCİ DEĞERLENDİRME DOSYASI öğretmenler tarafından kullanılacak ve her öğrencinin performansı gözlenerek ayrıntılı kayıtlar tutulup, öğrencilere gereken yönlendirmeler yapılacaktır.

Bizler, İngilizce Bölümü olarak bu dokümanları hazırlarken Avrupa Dil Portfolyosu’nda yer alan esasları ve dil öğrenimindeki en son gelişmeleri inceleyerek, Türk Eğitim Sistemi’nin gereksinmelerine uygun düzenlemeler yaptık.

Katılımınız ve katkılarınızla bu projeyi daha da geliştirebileceğimize inanıyoruz.

9th GRADES - (LEVEL 1)

1. COURSE DESCRIPTION

The level 1 course is designed for pupils, who have acquired a certain level of English. The aim of this course is to hone the pupils’ language skills and to encourage them to aspire to their full potential. In order to achieve this our pupils will be asked to prepare projects which will be exhibited in their own classrooms and school corridors; write and read articles; watch and listen to the news in English and make presentations throughout the year.

The video watching lessons will enable pupils to understand authentic material, recognize different accents and see language in context. The programme will not only prepare pupils for communication with native speakers of English, but will also help them to become culturally literate.

Our curriculum in Level 1 is based on pair work and collaborative activities which enable pupils to take a more active and creative role in learning and allow the maximum number of pupils to participate. These activities encourage pupils to work together, to become more independent, and take more responsibility for their own learning.

We, as the English Department, follow a student-centered approach that allows pupils to practice English and encourages them to learn from each other. By the end of the year our pupils will have acquired the skills they need to express themselves confidently, accurately and fluently.

The course will be divided into Main Course and Skills. Two hours a week will be taught by a native speaker.

1. DERSİN TANIMI

İngilizce bilgileri orta düzeyin başlarında olan öğrencilerin oluşturduğu bu sınıfta amaç, öğrencilerin sahip oldukları yabancı dil düzeyini geliştirmek ve kapasitelerini en etkili şekilde kullanmalarını sağlama yönünde onları cesaretlendirmektir. Bu amacın gerçekleştirilebilmesi için öğrencilerimiz sınıflarında ve okulda sergilenmek üzere projeler hazırlayacaklar, İngilizce makaleler yazacak ve okuyacaklar, İngilizce haberler dinleyecekler, izleyecekler ve bunları yorumlayarak sınıfta sunacaklardır. Her ünitenin sonunda yapılacak olan video dersleriyle öğrencilerimiz değişik aksanları tanıma fırsatı bulacaklar ve orijinal tekstleri anlayabileceklerdir.

Yıl boyunca, öğrencilerimizin öğrenme sürecine aktif olarak katılabilecekleri, dili doğru, akıcı ve etkin bir şekilde kullanabilecekleri dersler yapılması hedeflenmektedir.

İngilizce bölümü tarafından hazırlanan öğrenci merkezli bu program öğrencilerimizin kendi öğrenme süreçlerinde sorumluluk almalarını, farkındalık kazanmalarını ve bağımsız öğrenme becerilerinin gelişmesini sağlayacaktır.

9th GRADES - (LEVEL 2)

1. COURSE DESCRIPTION

The aim of our course is to present the traditional cultural-linguistic features of English and help the pupils build cultural literacy. In addition to classic beginning-level topics, vocabulary, and grammar, the syllabus includes highly practical language in interactive form. The pupils are motivated to participate in pair and group work activities. The course will also help pupils to communicate with people from different cultures in formal and informal situations. Therefore, the focus will be on the four core skills – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking; interwoven with these will be special emphasis on grammar and everyday vocabulary phrases. There is a clearly identified communicative goal that culminates in an activity to confirm pupils’ progress.

Systematic guided practice will help to make the essential models studied in class memorable and transferable to pupils’ own lives. Through the practical social language syllabus, the pupils will be provided with the essential language for their real needs. At the end of the year pupils’ English communication skills will have reached pre-intermediate standard.

1. COURSE DESCRIPTION

The aim of this course is to enable pupils to comprehend written texts, speak fluent and accurate English, think logically, organize their ideas, prepare presentations, improve their vocabulary and specialize in TOEFL tests.

The course focuses on the needs of pupils wishing to sit the TOEFL exam and prepares pupils for the new version of the TOEFL IBT test which now covers all facets of English proficiency, including a test of spoken English. . During their TOEFL preparation, as part of their integrated language program, pupils will learn how to organize the four integrated skills to develop critical thinking and communicative competence. At the same time pupils will acquire valuable skills such as note-taking and reading for gist or detail which can be transferred into other academic disciplines. In our lessons we follow the latest techniques to prepare our pupils for this integrated test.

Ultimately, our course aims to enlighten pupils and help them become independent learners who take active roles during their learning process

Bu dersin amacı öğrencilerimizin yazılı metinleri anlamalarını, akıcı ve doğru İngilizce konuşmalarını, yaratıcı düşünebilmelerini ve düşüncelerini organize edebilmelerini, Toefl testlerinde deneyim kazanmalarını ve sunum yapma becerilerini geliştirmeyi sağlamaktır. Ayrıca öğrencilerimiz uluslararası düzeyde tanınan ve geçerliliği olan ve tüm becerileri test eden TOEFL IBT sınavına son teknikler kullanılarak hazırlanmaktadır. Bu çalışmalarda öğrencilerin tüm becerilerini geliştirmeye önem verilecek; öğrenciler okuduklarını ve dinlediklerini not alma tekniğini kullanarak yorumlayacak ve düşüncelerini belirten ileri düzeyde kompozisyonlar yazacaklardır. 1. COURSE DESCRIPTION

The aim of this course is to prepare pupils to understand spoken and written English and to express themselves confidently, accurately, and fluently. To develop pupils’ communication skills has become an important issue since learners today are more likely to communicate with both native and non-native speakers in travel, business, study and work. For that reason, in addition to systematic guided practice which helps to teach grammar, vocabulary and makes essential models memorable and transferable to pupils’ lives we also present the traditional cultural-linguistic features of English and prepare pupils to communicate with speakers of English by helping them build cultural literacy.

To lend interest, seriousness and authentic practice, our course contains a variety of texts from authentic sources so that pupils can cope with real-world material and focus on four skills-Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

To enable pupils to take a more active and creative role in learning our lessons are enriched with pair work, group work and collaborative activities. In working together, pupils become more independent and rely less on the teacher for guidance and ultimately take responsibility of their own learning.

Bu dersin amacı öğrencilerin kendilerini doğru ve akıcı bir biçimde ifade edebilmelerini sağlayarak İngilizcelerini bir ileri düzeye getirmektir. Gelişen çevre koşullarına ayak uydurabilmek için İngilizce kullanabilme ve farklı kültürlerden gelen insanlar ile iletişim kurabilme bir gereklilik haline gelmiştir. Bu nedenle öğrencilerimize gerek bazı kalıpların, kelime ve gramer bilgilerinin yerleşmesine yardımcı olan, gerekse öğrenilen kalıpların kullandırıldığı egzersizler ve orijinal materyallerden oluşan derslerimiz öğrencilerimizin dinleme, okuma, yazma ve konuşma becerilerini geliştirmeyi hedeflemektedir. Ayrıca öğrencilerimizin derslere bire bir katılımı sağlanarak yaratıcılıklarının arttırılması, öğrenme sorumluluğunu üstlenmeleri ve öğretmenlerine daha az bağlı bireyler haline gelmeleri sağlanmaya çalışılmaktadır.

10D (Language Class)

1. COURSE DESCRIPTION

The goal of this course is to give pupils an understanding of English through detailed grammar revision, advanced vocabulary and authentic texts. Now that pupils have chosen their field, all the studies will be aimed at success in the university entrance exams. Pupils will be encouraged to revise sentence structures in detail, learn extensive vocabulary and get used to answering the type of multiple choice question asked in the YDS and TOEFL IBT exams.

One of our aims in getting pupils to read and listen to authentic materials is to get them reading and listening for gist (general understanding) before getting into the detail of specific information and the understanding of every word they see or hear. In other words our aim is to help pupils to become proficient in their ability to deal with spoken and written text in the real world even if they do not understand every single word. Thus helping them to become better readers and listeners which will help them in future studies at university.

The aim of the writing course is primarily to introduce pupils to paragraph unity to enable them to answer paragraph questions that are asked in YDS and TOEFL IBT, and improve their writing techniques to write essays.

All the studies pupils do in 10^th, 11^th and 12^th years will prepare them for their future education at university. Their success in the university entrance exam depends on a serious approach to lessons, systematic working habits and continuous practice. Eventual success is based on the general attitude and serious work of the pupils throughout these years.

10D (Dil Alanı)

1. DERSİN TANIMI

Dil alanı İngilizce programı öğrencilere öğrenmekte oldukları dilin gramer yapısını ileri düzeyde edinme, kelime hazinesini geliştirme ve orijinal metinleri anlama çalışmalarından oluşmuştur. Öğrenciler artık alanlarını seçmiş olduklarından yapılacak tüm çalışmalarla üniversite giriş sınavlarındaki başarılarının arttırılması hedeflenmektedir. Bu amaçla çoktan seçmeli test sorularını cevaplama teknikleri kazandırılmaya çalışılırken, kelime hazineleri zenginleştirilmeye, kendilerini sözlü ve yazılı ifade edebilme yetenekleri geliştirilmeye çalışılacaktır. Ayrıca öğrencilerin orijinal metinleri inceleme ve yorumlayabilmeleri hedeflenmektedir.

10., 11. ve 12. sınıf dil programı ile öğrencilerin üniversite giriş sınavında (YDS) başarılı olmaları hedeflenmektedir. Bu ise ancak öğrencilerimizin ilk günden başlayarak üç yıl boyunca hiç aksatmadan yapacakları düzenli çalışmalar, alan derslerine ciddi yaklaşımları ve hedeflerinin farkında olarak o hedefe ulaşmak için gösterecekleri çaba ile mümkündür.

To improve our pupils’ writing skills we provide them with a thorough preparation for different types of essay and our pupils are encouraged to write all types of composition, including descriptive, argumentative, discursive, narrative, reports, articles, letters and reviews.

A collection of short stories has been designed to appeal to general interest in literature which will enable the students to practise all four language skills, and lead the students through detailed analysis of the stories. The goal of this course is to prepare pupils to understand and use spoken and written English and to express themselves confidently, accurately and fluently. In short, to be proficient in all the four skills. Speaking practice in the form of debates, discussions, pair-work / group-work dialogue creation, etc will be given at every opportunity – the fact that all classroom interaction will be in English is taken for granted. Writing will be given attention, from the elimination of grammatical and punctuation errors to work on essential styles and techniques, and pupils will be expected to write frequently in the classroom and for homework. Reading skills will be practiced and honed through the use of varied texts. 1. COURSE DESCRIPTION

At the upper intermediate level we want to draw on pupils’ existing knowledge as well as offer them new information. Pupils who take this course are assumed to have a grasp of more than basic vocabulary areas and grammar patterns, be able to read and listen to a wide range of texts which use a variety of language, express themselves efficiently both in spoken and written English, improve the skills necessary for coherent essay writing and be able to use language for communication.

A varied topic syllabus has been designed to appeal to general interest in order to facilitate and stimulate the language acquisition progress. Since it is deemed crucial for pupils to reflect periodically upon their progress, pupils will be expected to involve themselves actively in the learning process. It is hoped that such participation will endow them with a greater understanding of how to be successful.

Consequently, all the studies that pupils will be involved in this year and the following year will prepare them for the university entrance exam. The objective of the course is twofold: to develop language skills to instill in students literary awareness and to involve students actively in the learning experience.

The course allows students to enrich what they have learnt while getting valuable TOEFL examination practice. Direct practice in task types of TOEFL enables students to sharpen their listening, reading,speaking and writing skills in an integrated way.This development helps them perform better as test takers and enables them to master lexical skills.

The course offers a dynamic, communicative approach to language learning through an exploration of the literary world in the English language. Students are encouraged to analyze literary texts of different types. They understand the ways in which the writers’ choices of form, structure and language shape meaning. As they learn more about the art of writing they become more receptive and responsive. They have a chance to communicate messages or express their own reaction. With TOEFL studies, pupils will be able to use correct test techniques, which will help in passing the prep year at university. 1. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Success in the university entrance exams depends on a continuously serious approach to the course, systematic working habits, constant practice and a positive attitude towards the exam. Moreover, it is essential that pupils take an active role in the learning process to ensure success. The goal of this course is to guide pupils preparing for this exam and give them thorough and systematic exam training through detailed grammar revision, advanced vocabulary exposure and literature development. This course is designed as follows:

The course is a step by step program designed to consolidate, refine and extend what pupils already know and provide them with the critical test taking techniques needed to perform well in the university entrance exam. Pupils will be encouraged to practice YDS and TOEFL and familiarize themselves with all types of exam questions. Most of the practice tests will be assigned as homework so that the limited class hours can be used for checking and providing feedback.

It covers literature work supplemented with TOEFL and YDS type reading passages with special emphasis placed on vocabulary. Pupils will be expected to discuss and comment on the literature read and to express feelings, ideas and points of view about the texts being dealt with.

Pupils need to train for YDS just as they would train for any other competitive event. From time to time this might be a difficult and frustrating experience for pupils, but we believe that by making the most of their preparation period, and with the help of their teachers, they will be able to acquire the skills of being good test takers. To ensure success, it is important for pupils not only to rely on their teachers to provide all the input and training, but also to have the self confidence to take responsibility for their learning. 1. DERSİN TANIMI

Lise 4. sınıf öğrencilerinin temel hedefi olan üniversite giriş sınavında başarılı olmak, dersleri ciddiye almayı, sistemli bir şekilde çalışmayı, sürekli tekrar yapmayı ve pozitif yaklaşım içinde bulunmayı gerektirir. Bunun yanı sıra, öğrencinin hazırlık sürecinde sorumluluk alarak etkin bir rol alması da temel koşuldur. Dil alanını seçen öğrenciler için İngilizce dersi programı, bu hedefe ulaşmak amacıyla aşağıdaki şekilde oluşturulmuştur.

Main Course, öğrencilerin yabancı dilde kazanmış oldukları bilgi ve becerileri, onları üniversite yabancı dil sınavına (YDS) hazırlamak üzere pekiştirip geliştirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu bağlamda: dil bilgisi, kelime bilgisi ve anlama becerisini geliştirmeye yönelik bir program uygulanmakta; buna paralel olarak YDS soru tipleri tanıtılıp, öğrencilere soru çözümleme teknikleri kavratılmaktadır.

Ders saatlerinin sınırlı olması nedeniyle, uygulanacak testlerin büyük bir bölümü ev ödevi olarak verilecek ve yanıtlar derslerde kontrol edilerek, saptanacak eksikler üzerinde odaklanılacaktır.
